Marching and fighting for the elimination of wage theft

El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos and Encuentro were present at the annual march celebrating the life of Cesar Chavez and his efforts made for the human rights of farm workers. The march was held on Saturday March 27 in Albuquerque.

Chavez was a farm worker and civil rights activist who initiated the United Farmers Union alongside Dolores Huerta.

Chavez and Huerta led protests and boycotts demanding better wages for all agricultural workers.

Years later Encuentro and El Centro De Igualdad y Derechos believe that the work Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta did is just as meaningful, especially in New Mexico.

“Wage theft is something that still happens and is very common in the immigrant community here in Albuquerque,” said Encuentro’s Community Media Coordinator, John Acosta. “And so here we are marching and shouting with El Centro because we are tired of how our people are being treated, we are tired that the hours they’re putting in aren’t being counted. They contribute to the economy and what these companies are doing is not fair. Yes we have progressed since the days of Cesar Chavez, but wage theft injustices continue to happen so we must continue to fight for equal pay.”
